In a group setting, despite the teachers’ best efforts to make the learning experience as personal as possible, some students get lost in the sauce of time constraints and competing student needs. As a former classroom teacher, I’ve experienced the restrictions of large class sizes, distractions, and schedules that make it difficult to attend to each student in the way that they require. Like many classroom teachers, at the end of the school day, I found myself still thinking about that one student who needed more time, attention, and reteaching that I couldn’t provide within the designated reading block of that day. It’s one of the main reasons why I started Mrs. B’s Reading Room, LLC, to give readers the attention and time they needed that they couldn’t get in a traditional classroom environment. One-on-one tutoring creates a space for the reader to be the star. Whether it’s an emotional support check-in, providing direct feedback, or giving readers more time for guided practice, tutoring provides the reader with the instructor’s uninterrupted guidance and attention. Tutoring creates a window that gives the reader the space to take as much time as they need to get what they need to get. The reader doesn’t have to compete with the needs of other readers, they have a safe place to make mistakes, and they can practice without the pressure of comparing themselves to their peers.

One-on-one instruction gives the reader a chance to home in on the skills they find most challenging to master. Classroom teachers manage the needs of many students and often choose teaching methods, and tailor lessons to meet the needs and interests of the majority. Tutors, however, can choose the teaching style, methods, and topics that best suit the individual reader. Tutors choose reading material and activities based on the individual and their skill level and interests. Using assessments to guide lesson planning, lessons are targeted and accelerated to meet readers where they are and move them to where they need to be quickly.
